Aim of the course:

The main purpose of the course is to introduce fundamental and applied aspects of the problems concerning biocompatible materials in biomedicine to students. The main focus of the course are aspects of working with biomaterials as hydrophobic properties of various insoluble biopolymers and obtaining biocompatible materials for regenerative medicine. As part of the course, students will get familiarized with a set of methods for obtaining bioresorbable films, scaffolds and microspheres with different surface microstructure and porosity and learn about their mechanical properties. Furthermore, the students will also get acquainted with methods for drug loading of biopolymer structures and studying drug release in prolonged drug delivery models.

Description:

The course of practical biotechnology presents five practical tasks, as a result of which students will learn basic skills in the laboratory, working under fume hood, working with polymers, and working with volatile substances. They will learn how to plan the experiment, set up the experiment themselves, and also learn to write reports in the form of small abstracts. The course will include the following practical work: obtaining polymer films and calculating hydrophobicity through the force of surface tension; obtaining and studying polymer porous scaffolds; studying porous polymer scaffolds in vitro; obtaining and studying polymer porous microparticles; release control of drugs and polymer porous microparticles; study of protein adsorption on polymer films and matrices.

Grading:

Work on seminars and written task reports.
